Green gram is also known as green moong dal. In Kerala whole moong beans / cheru payar is boiled to make a dry preparation and is served with porridge. From moong beans a sweet preparation is also made. In Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh sundal is prepared from whole moong beans seasoned with spices and grated coconut.
This recipe is simple to prepare. Main ingredients are boiled moong beans and grated coconut.
INGREDIENTS
Green gram /cheru paiyar 1/2 tea cup
Water 3/4 tea cup
Shallots / onion finely cut 1/2 tea cup
Dry red chillies 2 broken
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Mustard 1 tsp
Curry leaves 1 sprig
Refined oil/ olive oil/ coconut oil 2 tsp
Coconut grated 1/2 tea cup
Salt to taste
METHOD
Wash bengal gram add 3/4 cup water and pressure cook for 4 whistles. It should not overcook or under cook.
Take a kadai / wok heat oil. Add mustard seeds let it splutter then add curry leaves, dry chillies and onions and saute till onion turns golden colour.
Add turmeric and saute for 3-4 seconds. Add the cooked green gram, salt and saute for two minutes. Finally add the grated coconut mix well . Turn off the heat.
Serve with rice/ Indian breads.
