Paruppu vada/ masala vada is a popular snack in south India. It is a tea time snack and a street food in Kerala.

Chana Dal is high in fibre and helps to lower cholesterol. It is a source of zinc, folate, calcium and protein. This Dal is full of nutrition and can be digested easily.

It is a great source of energy, controls blood pressure, prevents anaemia, aids in digestion, balances hormonal levels in women, balances blood sugar levels and keeps heart healthy.

The recipe given here is a deep fried snack. It’s very delicious and easy to make.

INGREDIENTS

  • Chana Dal 1 cup
  • Fennel seeds 1 tbsp
  • Red chillies 2-3
  • Onion 1
  • Curry leaves a handful
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Salt to taste

METHOD

Wash and Soak chana dal for 3-4 hours. Drain the water completely from chana Dal in a colander.

Add red dry chillies and coarsely blend in the small jar of the blender. Add 3/4 th of chana dal and coarsely blend it with. Water is not needed. Transfer it to a mixing bowl.

Add finely chopped onion, fennel seeds, roughly chopped curry leaves, salt and the remaining 1/4 Dal into the coarsely blended dal. Mix it well.

Heat oil in a deep frying pan in medium flame. Divide the mixture into lemon size balls. Grease your palm and flatten the lemon shaped balls over your palms into Patti shape and slide it into the oil.

Fry 3-4 patties at a time, depending on oil and size of vadas. Fry in batches turning both sides till golden brown and crispy.

Drain over paper towels.

Enjoy with a hot cup of tea.
