Smoked chicken curry is a delicious curry recipe. To give the curry a smokey flavour or tandoori flavour hot charcoal is placed on a plate on top of the curry and ghee is poured on top of charcoal. It is immediately covered with a lid, this gives a very good aroma and flavour to the chicken curry.

The recipe requires lot of ingredients, so I have given a detailed recipe step by step with pictures.

This chicken recipe goes well as an accompaniment with any Indian bread or southindian breakfast or rice. I prepared ribbon wheat parotta to go with this chicken curry and it was delicious.

While preparing this dish you can increase or decrease the chillies, salt and ghee/oil according to your taste.

Chicken is high in protein content, rich in vitamins and minerals, aids in weight loss, controls blood pressure, has anti cancer properties, reduces cholesterol and treats common cold.

INGREDIENTS

FOR MARINATION

  • Chicken legs 3
  • Red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1 /4 tsp
  • Lemon juice 1 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil 1 tbsp

FOR WET GRIND

  • Cloves 3
  • Fennel seeds 1 tsp
  • Cardamom 3
  • Cinnamon 2 inch piece
  • Red chilli 3
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Pepper corns 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1 /4 tsp
  • Onion medium 3
  • Salt to taste
  • Ginger garlic paste 1 tbsp
  • Tomato medium 2
  • Almond 20
  • Garam masala 1 tsp
  • Kasoori methi 1 tsp
  • Oil 2 bsp

OTHER INGREDIENTS

  • Chopped square onion 1
  • capsicum 1
  • Oil 1 /4 cup + 2 tbsp

METHOD

Wash and drain the water from chicken. Marinate the chicken with chilli powder, turmeric powder, lemon juice, salt and oil overnight or for 4 to 5 hours.

In a deep frying pan heat 2 tbsp oil, add red dry chillies, pepper corns, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, cloves, cinnamon. cardamom, saute on low heat for a minute. Add the roughly chopped onions saute for 5 minutes or till it changes colour.

Add roughly chopped tomatoes, almonds, garam masala, kasoori methi, ginger garlic paste and turmeric powder. Saute for 2 to 3 minutes on low heat. Add salt and turn off heat, let it cool down

Once it cools down ground it into a fine paste in a blender. Keep the masala aside.

In a deep frying pan add 1 /4 cup oil. Add the marinated chicken and lower and cook it turning it once in a way till almost done. Take it out on to a dish and keep aside.

In the same oil add the ground masala and cook for 5 minutes on low heat. Add 1 -2 cups of water.

Add the chicken, chopped onion , capsicum and cook on low heat for ten to 15 minutes stirring in between so that the masalas dont burn at the bottom of the pan. Adjust the consistency of the gravy accordingly and add water. Check for salt.

Turn off heat on top of gravy keep a small plate on it place a burnt charcoal and add ghee. Immediately close with a lid. Let it sit for ten minutes.

Serve hot and enjoy this delicious smoked chicken curry with any Indian bread of your choice or with rice.
