Green gram or green moong dal is rich in Vitamin A, B, C and E and also in many minerals including iron, calcium and potassium. It helps to lower high cholesterol and keeps a check on blood sugar levels. Its anti fungal, anti bacterial and anti cancer. Its used as an effective face mask or facial scrub.
Green gram or moong dal payasam/kheer is a simple sweet dish. I learnt this recipe from my mom, she prepares during festivals. It is easy, quick, simple and healthy sweet dish. Green gram is pressure cooked and then it is cooked in jaggery. Grated coconut and cardamon are added to give flavour to the dish. This can be served hot or cold with chopped banana/apple.
INGREDIENTS
Green gram 1/2 tea cup
Coconut 1/2 tea cup
Jaggery 1 and 1/2 tea cup
Cardamon freshly powdered 1 tsp
Apple/ripe banana finely chopped 1
METHOD
Add 1 and 1/4 tea cup of water to 1/2 tea cup green gram in a vessel and keep the vessel in the pressure cooker for 4 whistles.
In a deep vessel boil 1 tea cup water and add jaggery. On low fire dissolve it. Turn off the heat. Strain it to remove the impurities.
In a deep vessel add the green gram and the required jaggery ( as per your taste). Add the grated coconut and cook on medium to low fire for 8- 10 minutes or till it becomes thick.Turn off the heat. Add the cardamon powder.
When it cools down garnish it with finely chopped apple/banana.
